It was after noon when Junior returned.  He was still wet, but it didn’t dampen his hunger.  I stood next to the open door when I shot these.  Junior’s not as nervous as Red.

Wet Squirrels…

More rain today.  Red and Junior came by and they sure look ragged with their wet coats and tails.  It doesn’t seem to bother them…as long as there are a few nuts.  I had to clean out the Brazils, pecans, and almonds.  They decided it wasn’t something they were interested in.  To quote an old cliché, You can take the squirrel out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the squirrel, or something like that.  One has to remember that these are Bavarian squirrels.

We’re back home and the rain we left for a few days has returned.  I did pick up a bag of mixed nuts that were on sale.  Pecans, brazils, hazelnuts, walnuts, but mostly almonds.  A wet Red came by after two this afternoon.  He jumped from the balcony lounge chair to the roof of the feeder, wanting to see what I had placed by the door for him.  He came in and sniffed the pecan, brazil, and almond, before taking a walnut.  Then he came back and sniffed them again before taking a hazel.  I cracked open a pecan and he finally took that one.  I cracked a few Brazils and almonds and set them in the feeder.  A mess I’ll have to clean up later if he doesn’t like them.   Okay, I’ll crack them once, but after that you have to do the work.  I think he was glad to see us.

Lots of rain today.  Perfect weather for nut gathering. It was noon when I set a few nuts on the door frame.  Red confiscated one and headed into the trees.  A few minutes later I saw a red squirrel chasing another through the branches of the hazel.  I couldn’t tell who was chasing who.  When Red returned for another nut, I assumed he had chased off the interloper.  Could it have been Junior that was run off?  Tomorrow my wife and I are departing the hamlet for a few days.  Until we return, they should be able to survive on what I will set out and what they have buried.

I got the feeling that Junior and Red wanted to get back to basics. Okay guys, you asked for it and that’s all your going to get.  In the feeder, on the balcony floor, or out of the bowl.  A few pictures I took this morning.
